Alan Hertz
Possessing a widely recognized command of his instrument, Alan Hertz's open-ended creativity and propensity for musical exploration has placed him in the unique position of being sought after as a premier drummer in the Bay Area music scene. Born in 1974, Alan's experience with music began at the remarkably early age of two.
At that age, with a musical influence coming from Alan's musician father, Alan began to play the snare drum. His demonstrated natural musical aptitude led his father to purchase a drum kit for him soon thereafter. As evidenced by his early musical development, a fundamental understanding of music has been ever-present in Alan's life. It is through this very basic connection that his statedly musical approach to drumming has been forged.
In 1998, Alan became involved in a group that became known as KVHW. With it's blend of rock energy and a fiercely spirited, uplifting approach to group improvisation combined with jazz, world, and rhythm & blues music, this group erupted onto the San Francisco Bay music scene. The genesis of this group came when two longtime collaborators Steve Kimock (Zero, The Other Ones, Phil & Friends) and Bobby Vega (Zero, Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver) put together a jam for a benefit show bringing in Frank Zappa alumnus Ray White and Alan. An enormous public outcry of support for this group soon followed. The group became popular as a nationally touring act throughout 1998-99. Unfortunately, things came to a close for KVHW in January of 2000.

In addition to performing with KVHW, Alan has performed with an ever growing list of artists. These artists include Terry Haggerty, Ike Willis, Henry Kaiser, Michael Manring, and Primitive Medicine (with Michael Carabello, Kai Eckhardt, Sykuru, Kit Walker, renowned tabla player Eman, as well as James Rotondi of Mr. Bungle).
Recently, Alan was joined by Trey Anastasio and Les Claypool at an Alan Hertz Project show in San Rafael, CA, a sign of the huge recognition he has attained within the jamband world.
